Call me Gabe—short for Gabriel Duran Jr. I’m part of a family that has been in Las Cruces for 5 generations. My grandfather farmed an area that is part of District 35.I attended local schools: McArthur and Alameda elementary, Picacho Middle School, and Mayfield High School. Then I joined the Army, but near the end of my training I was injured and discharged as an honorable disabled veteran.
When I returned from the Army I fathered a son. Like many young, single, fathers I needed help. I got support from a non-profit, Bringing Up Dads (BUDS), which stresses the importance of owning up to the demands of fatherhood and the need for kids to have positive male role models. Today, the father of three children who live with me and my wife, I’m still involved with BUDS and still committed to the cause of strengthening family structures and providing healthy neighborhood environments for families.
Part of this commitment led me to become a sports coach: I’ve coached baseball, basketball, soccer, and football for the past 13 years.Through sports I can connect more deeply with kids and families in my community, and it is a source of great personal satisfaction.
Striving to improve myself, I went to NMSU and got a BA in government and an MA in public administration. While doing this I explored my Native American background, discovering that I had a lot of native DNA.
Gabriel Duran’s Plan:
“As a State Representative, I will prioritize ensuring that ALL New Mexicans have access to healthcare. I will work to keep our doctors in New Mexico.”
“ I will make sure our children receive a good education. I will support a strong educational system that empowers dedicated teachers, parents, and shapes bright futures.”
